Explosion in Bin Closes off Southsea Common in Portsmouth
Clarence Parade, Osborne Road and Avenue De Caen have been closed following an ongoing police incident this lunchtime. Vehicles and the public are being diverted away from the scene whilst with the incident. Cordons have been in place and Police tape has been put across the roads with Police cars blocking the way after it is understood that a small explosion took place in a dustbin on Southsea Common.

Police are advising people in neighbouring properties to stay on the ground floor at the back of their buildings and away from windows. Hampshire Police said: The cordon was put in place following a minor explosion, which we have now established that the explosion was caused by a smouldering barbeque and what we believe was a disused ‘rocket-style’ firework. We would like to take this opportunity to remind people of the importance of disposing of barbeques and fireworks safely. A man was injured in this incident and required hospital treatment. Thankfully he has been discharged with minor injuries. Our priority throughout was to ensure the safety of members of the public and we thank the community for their patience during this time.
