Veteran Volunteer Ends Press Officer Role

After more than two decades of tireless volunteering, George Chastney has stepped down as press officer for Cowes RNLI. George began his journey back in 2003 with Cowes Rescue, the town’s independent lifeboat service, before continuing when the RNLI took charge in 2008.

Maritime Expert and Lifesaving Hero

A former journalist, George was no stranger to the sea’s dangers. He covered major incidents like the 1987 Red Funnel hydrofoil collision for the Southern Evening Echo, a tragedy that helped spark the creation of Cowes’ own lifeboat service. George’s connection runs even deeper—he owes his life to the RNLI after falling down a cliff in Ilfracombe at just 15.

His RAF days, including a near-miss landing and a scary balloon crash over the Isle of Wight, only fuelled his respect for rescue crews. George was more than a press officer; he was a fundraising champion and a passionate voice for lifesaving missions.

Farewell and Fond Memories

At a heartfelt farewell ceremony last week, George was honoured alongside crew member Jean-Marc Bonello, who’s moving to mainland Europe after five years of service. Both were presented with commemorative mugs and cards from the crew.

“Loyalty and commitment are the hallmarks of a lifeboat service. Jean-Marc and George have demonstrated that. They have both been respected members of the team making significant contributions in different ways,” said Mark Southwell, Cowes RNLI’s lifeboat operations manager.

Still Fighting for Lifesaving Legacy

Though stepping down as press officer, George will remain closely involved as the station archivist, preserving Cowes’ rich history of lifesaving. He’s also set to receive a certificate this November, marking over a decade of dedicated service.

“As someone who quite probably owes his life to the RNLI,” George reflected, “it has been an enormous privilege to share the charity’s remarkable and often challenging work with the public.”
