At least three people have been killed and around 20 injured after the Gloria funicular, one of Lisbon’s most famous tourist attractions, derailed and crashed on Wednesday.
Footage from the scene showed the tram-like funicular, which links downtown Lisbon to the Bairro Alto district, almost completely destroyed as firefighters and paramedics pulled victims from the wreckage.
Casualties
Emergency services confirmed that nine of the injured remain in a serious condition, with others being treated for less severe wounds.
The identities of those killed have not yet been released, and officials have not confirmed whether foreign tourists are among the victims.
Cause under investigation
It remains unclear what caused the derailment. Authorities have launched an investigation while emergency workers continue to search through debris.
The Gloria is one of three historic funiculars in the Portuguese capital, all of which are popular with both tourists and residents.
International reaction
The tragedy has drawn international concern, with neighbouring Spain and European Union officials offering condolences. Lisbon’s mayor is expected to make a statement later tonight.
