Police have been granted more time to question three teenagers arrested in connection with the fatal assault of a man on a popular Sheppey beach.

The victim, believed to be in his 40s, died on Sunday evening (10 August) after suffering severe head injuries during an altercation off Warden Bay Road near Leysdown. It is alleged he was struck on the head with a large concrete slab.

A 16-year-old girl and two boys, aged 14 and 15, were arrested on suspicion of murder on Monday and remain in custody. At a hearing this morning (12 August), District Judge William Nelson at Medway Magistrates’ Court approved an application to extend their detention.

Witness Accounts

According to witnesses, the man was chased along a sea path before being attacked. A woman who attempted CPR reportedly told a bystander she had seen one of the youths kick the victim in the head. Despite efforts from locals and emergency services, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

One witness, visiting on holiday with his 11-year-old son, described the attack as "shocking" and said he tried to shield his child from the scene. Police have maintained a cordon in the area, deploying sniffer dogs and forensic teams near the Warden Bay Restaurant.

Local residents have expressed shock at the killing, Long-term visitors and residents say the island has seen an increase in youth crime and antisocial behaviour in recent years.
