A man and a woman have been arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of one-year-old Jayla-Jean Mclaren, who died in hospital on the Isle of Wight after suffering serious injuries.
Jayla-Jean was taken to hospital on 1 August after being found with life-threatening injuries. She died two days later, on Sunday 3 August.
A 31-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman, both from Newport, were initially arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and bailed. Police have now re-arrested them on suspicion of murder as part of the ongoing investigation.
In an earlier statement, Jayla-Jean’s family said:
"Mummy, daddy, and nanny will always love you. Fly high princess."
Detective Superintendent Rod Kenny from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said the case had caused "considerable distress" in the community.
"The arrests made today are just one part of a much wider set of inquiries in our investigation to establish exactly what happened to Jayla-Jean, and those inquiries remain ongoing.
We would like to reiterate that you should not speculate on this case, particularly on social media, as this could affect our investigation."
Police have urged anyone with information to contact them directly, stressing the need to protect the integrity of the inquiry.
