A 39-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted kidnap after allegedly trying to lure two young children away from their guardians in Oxford city centre.
The incident happened just after 4pm on Thursday when Thames Valley Police received reports that a man had attempted to lead the children away from the adults they were with.
Officers responded swiftly, arresting the suspect, who remains in custody while an investigation is underway.
Edward Mundy, leader of the Oxford Community Independent Group on Oxford City Council, described the incident as “hugely distressing” but stressed that such events are “very rare” in the city. He urged residents and visitors to remain vigilant, especially during the busy summer period when the city attracts large numbers of tourists.
“Criminals can see this as an opportunity,” Mr Mundy said. “Be aware of your surroundings, especially in regard to children, and report suspicious activity immediately.”
Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to contact them on 101, quoting reference 43250401541.
