Tributes Paid to Retired Essex Police Dog Diesel After His Death Aged 9

Tributes have been pouring in following the passing of retired Essex Police Dog Diesel, who died after a short illness at the age of 9.
Diesel, a German Shepherd-Malinois cross, served the communities of Essex with distinction for five years before retiring in April 2023. Throughout his career, Diesel was pivotal in detaining dangerous suspects, locating missing people, and uncovering crucial evidence including weapons.
In his final weeks of service, Diesel’s work was instrumental in ensuring three men were sentenced for a series of violent robberies in Basildon.
His handler, Sergeant Jamie Edwards, who worked alongside Diesel throughout his service, described him as “fearless and inquisitive.”
“I wanted to be a dog handler since I was a child and Diesel was exactly how I imagined a police dog would be,” said Sgt Edwards. “He kept us both safe during our five years patrolling Essex together.”
One of Diesel’s most recognised acts of bravery occurred in December 2018. While searching for suspects involved in two knifepoint robberies in Benfleet, Sgt Edwards and Diesel witnessed a third robbery in progress. Without hesitation, they intervened. Diesel pursued and detained one of the fleeing suspects, an act that saw the duo honoured at the National Service Dog Bravery and Achievement Awards in 2021.
Following his retirement, Diesel adapted to life as a beloved family pet, enjoying his days playing in the garden and going for daily walks.
“Even in retirement, Diesel kept a keen eye on his surroundings and would still bark at a few suspicious characters,” Sgt Edwards added. “He passed away peacefully, cuddled by our family. Diesel leaves huge paws to fill and countless happy memories.”
Essex Police praised Diesel’s dedication and service. A spokesperson said: “Diesel’s contribution to policing in Essex was exemplary. He epitomised the bravery, loyalty, and determination that police dogs bring to our frontline.”
Diesel’s passing has resonated across the policing community, with officers, colleagues, and members of the public sharing tributes to the much-loved canine hero on social media.
