Former Met Police Officer Found Guilty of Computer Misuse After Sharing Sensitive Information

Overview

A former Metropolitan Police officer has been found guilty of misconduct in public office (MIPO) after illegally accessing and sharing confidential information from police computer systems.

Ex-PC Daniel Humphreys, 38, was convicted at Southwark Crown Court for sharing sensitive data without authorisation and for non-policing purposes. He was, however, cleared of a second MIPO charge relating to pursuing an inappropriate relationship with a vulnerable woman.

Humphreys will be sentenced on 3 October.

Background of the Case

The ex-officer met the woman in question while investigating an alleged assault by her former partner. After taking a statement at her home, he went on to provide her with confidential information from the Met’s systems, including crime reports and victims’ details unrelated to her case.

An investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) began in March 2022 following a mandatory conduct referral from the Met Police. By December 2022, a file of evidence was sent to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), leading to criminal charges.

Serious Breach of Standards

IOPC Director Amanda Rowe condemned Humphreys’ actions, stating:

“Police officers should be aware that any misuse of computer systems for non-policing reasons is potentially an extremely serious offence.

It is a form of corruption and reduces the public’s confidence in the police service. Former PC Humphreys now has a criminal record and will be sentenced in October.”

The investigation found that Humphreys had a case to answer for gross misconduct, particularly for abuse of power for sexual purpose (APSP) and unauthorised sharing of information. His actions breached police professional standards relating to:

  • Integrity
  • Confidentiality
  • Authority, respect and courtesy
  • Orders and instructions
  • Discreditable conduct

Resignation and Dismissal

Humphreys resigned from the Met on 3 May 2023, just one day before he was due to face an accelerated misconduct hearing. The hearing went ahead in his absence, with the gross misconduct allegations found proven. He would have been dismissed without notice had he remained an officer.

He has also been placed on the barred list, preventing him from ever working in policing again.

Next Steps

Humphreys is set to be sentenced at Southwark Crown Court on 3 October 2025.
