South East Braces for Thunderstorms after Met Office Issues Weather Warning

Overview

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for Kent and much of southern England, warning that almost a month’s worth of rain could fall within just a few hours tomorrow.

Forecasters predict heavy downpours, thunderstorms and frequent lightning strikes across the region, with up to 35mm of rain falling within an hour and potentially 60mm within two hours. Last year, the UK recorded an average of 82.4mm of rainfall across the entire month of July.

The weather warning will be in place from 10am to 9pm, with Kent, Surrey, Sussex, Essex and London expected to be hardest hit later in the afternoon before conditions improve in the evening.

“Consider if your location is at risk of flash flooding,” the Met Office said in a statement.
“If so, consider preparing a flood plan and an emergency flood kit. Prepare to protect your property and people from injury.”

Travel and Safety Advice

Forecasters have advised residents to secure outdoor items such as bins, garden furniture, gazebos, trampolines and sheds before the arrival of gusty winds.

Motorists are being urged to check road conditions and alter travel plans where necessary, while rail and bus passengers are advised to check updated timetables.

The Met Office also warned that power cuts may occur during the stormy conditions and recommended that households prepare by gathering torches, spare batteries and mobile phone power banks.

While the warning notes that there is a “very low likelihood” of the most severe weather occurring, emergency services have urged caution, particularly in areas prone to flooding.
