A man has been arrested following a horrific stabbing spree at a Walmart Supercenter in Traverse City, Michigan, that left 11 people injured, including six in critical condition, authorities confirmed Saturday evening.
The 42-year-old suspect, believed to be a Michigan resident, allegedly carried out the random attack alone using a folding-style knife. He was taken into custody just minutes after the first emergency call was made around 4:45pm local time.
According to Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael Shea, the scene was quickly secured by a sheriff’s deputy and brave members of the public, some of whom reportedly rendered first aid to victims inside the store.
“Eleven is 11 too many, but thank God it wasn’t more,” said Sheriff Shea.
Chaos and panic as violence erupts
Witnesses described the terrifying moment the attack began. Tiffany DeFell, 36, who was in the parking lot with her sister, said the panic unfolded without warning.
“It was really scary. Me and my sister were just freaking out. This is something you see in movies, not in real life — not here,” she said.
Six victims in critical condition
Munson Healthcare, which operates the region’s largest hospital, confirmed all 11 stabbing victims are being treated for their injuries. As of Saturday night, six were in critical condition and five were listed as serious. The victims’ identities and ages have not yet been released.
Governor, FBI respond
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer issued a statement expressing sympathy for those affected:
“Our thoughts are with the victims and the community reeling from this brutal act of violence.”
The FBI has also responded to assist with the investigation. Deputy Director Dan Bongino said federal resources were on standby to support local authorities.
Walmart: “Violence like this is unacceptable”
Walmart, in a statement late Saturday, confirmed it is cooperating fully with law enforcement:
“Violence like this is unacceptable. Our thoughts are with those who were injured, and we’re thankful for the swift action of first responders.”
Investigation ongoing
Authorities have not yet disclosed a motive for the attack but have ruled out the involvement of other suspects. Traverse City Police are continuing the investigation, with updates expected as more details become available.
Traverse City, a lakeside town known for its cherry festivals and scenic coastline, has been left shocked by this unprecedented act of violence.
