Epping Man Charged with Violent Disorder Following Anti-Migrant Protest
A 51-year-old man from Epping has been charged with violent disorder following unrest during Sunday night’s anti-migrant protest outside the Bell Hotel in Epping.
Dean Smith, of Madells, Epping, was one of six men arrested during the protest, which saw over 100 demonstrators gather in response to a recent sexual assault charge involving an asylum seeker housed at the hotel.
Essex Police confirmed the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) authorised the charge on Monday 21 July. Smith is scheduled to appear at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday 22 July.
Five Others Remain in Custody
Five other men arrested in connection with the incident remain in police custody, and Essex Police say they are continuing to work with the CPS on potential further charges.
Sunday’s protest was the latest in a series of volatile gatherings outside the hotel, with previous demonstrations resulting in injuries to police officers and extensive public disorder.
A police spokesperson added:
“We remain committed to holding those responsible for violent and criminal acts accountable. Our officers are working closely with the CPS, and further charges may follow.”
