Lambeth Councillor Suspended After Sexual Assault and Coercive Behaviour Charges
A Lambeth councillor has been suspended from his roles and party membership following serious criminal charges relating to an alleged assault in Peckham.
Councillor Irfan Mohammed, who has served on Lambeth Council since 2018 and currently represents the Clapham Park ward, appeared at Croydon Magistrates’ Court on Monday, July 14. He was charged with sexual assault, exposure, and engaging in coercive or controlling behaviour.
The charges relate to an incident on July 12, when Metropolitan Police were called to a report of an alleged assault involving a woman in Peckham.
In a statement, a Lambeth Council spokesperson confirmed Mohammed’s immediate removal from his council responsibilities:
“Following notification to the council from the police of an arrest and subsequent criminal charges, Councillor Irfan Mohammed has been removed from his position as a Deputy Cabinet Member and all council committees, pending resolution of the allegations against him. His membership of Lambeth Labour Group has also been suspended.
“We are unable to make further comment due to the ongoing criminal investigation.”
Mohammed is due to appear at Inner London Crown Court on August 11.
