EPPING – Monday 21 July 2025 | 07:00am
Far-right activist Tommy Robinson has announced he will attend a mass mobilisation protest in Epping on Sunday, July 27, in response to ongoing demonstrations outside the Bell Hotel, currently being used to house asylum seekers.

Robinson, who reposted the call to action on X (formerly Twitter), declared:

“The world will hear the lion roar 🦁”

The announcement, which quickly gained over 54,000 views, 306 reposts, and more than 2,100 likes, is likely to escalate tensions in the Essex town, already strained by a series of volatile protests that have resulted in violence, police injuries, and arrests.

Police on High Alert Ahead of Mobilisation

Essex Police, the Metropolitan Police, and British Transport Police are expected to review security plans in light of Robinson’s involvement. The July 27 event could draw significant crowds, including both supporters and counter-protesters, following last week’s violent clashes where eight officers were injured, vehicles were damaged, and multiple arrests were made.

A Section 35 Dispersal Order and Section 60AA face covering powers were enacted on Sunday evening, and may be extended ahead of the newly announced demonstration.

Background to the Protests

The Bell Hotel has been the site of heated protests since the arrest of Hadush Gerberslasie Kebatu, a 38-year-old Ethiopian asylum seeker charged with sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl. His case triggered widespread outrage and led to multiple nights of protest, some of which turned violent.

Police Statement Expected

Essex Police have not yet issued an official comment regarding Robinson’s planned appearance. However, Chief Superintendent Simon Anslow previously warned:

“For anyone who thinks we will tolerate their thuggery – think again… Our cells are ready.”

Community Divided

Residents have expressed concern over the growing presence of protesters, with some urging calm and others calling for government intervention regarding the hotel’s use.

A formal risk assessment and potential protest restrictions or conditions under the Public Order Act could be issued in the coming days as law enforcement prepares for possible unrest.
