A 100-metre police cordon remains in place around the pub and surrounding residential properties, with access to Ashford Road and the A20 still blocked. Residents are being told to stay indoors and motorists are advised to avoid the area.
Major Operation After Armed Standoff with Chainsaw-Wielding Man
The intensified operation follows a tense armed standoff that unfolded on Monday evening (7 July) after police attempted to arrest Sean O’Meara, 37, at his home on suspicion of assault.
O’Meara, who was wearing body armour and a gas mask, allegedly refused to surrender and emerged armed with a chainsaw and what officers believed was a homemade firearm or IED.
After unarmed officers withdrew, armed firearms teams, police dogs, and counterterror personnel were deployed. O’Meara was shot with baton rounds, and then live ammunition when he continued to advance. He suffered gunshot wounds to the arm and abdomen and remains in critical condition in hospital.
Mother Pleads for Son’s Recovery
In a statement, Catherine O’Meara, Sean’s mother, said:
“We are heartbroken by the events that occurred on the evening of July 7.
Our son remains in critical condition, and our focus is entirely on him as we pray for his recovery.
We are cooperating with the investigation and thank friends and neighbours for their support.”
IOPC Launches Investigation
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has confirmed it is now independently investigating the police shooting. Director Amanda Rowe said:
“We are analysing all evidence surrounding this serious incident. No officers are under investigation at this stage, and we appreciate the public’s patience as we gather the facts.”
Kent Police Confirm Discovery of Multiple Devices
A Kent Police spokesperson confirmed the reason for the extended closure of the A20:
“As part of ongoing enquiries into the incident on Ashford Road, a number of items were found which required safe disposal. The EOD are attending the scene.
The A20 is currently closed while safety operations are underway. Motorists should use alternative routes.”
Disruption and Security Measures Continue
-
Road closures remain in place on Ashford Road, Rock Hill, Jubilee Road, and the A20.
-
A large presence of armed police, forensic teams, and counterterror officers continues to secure the area.
Locals have described a “military-style response” with armoured vehicles, black evidence bags, and forensic officers seen throughout the day and night.
This remains a rapidly developing situation, and further updates will follow as the EOD completes its operation and Kent Police release more details.
