At least 13 people have been confirmed dead and more than 20 others remain missing following catastrophic flash flooding in central Texas, local officials have confirmed.
The flooding, which has devastated Kerr County, was triggered by an intense overnight downpour that saw up to 10 inches (25cm) of rain fall in a matter of hours. The Guadalupe River rapidly overflowed, inundating large areas and overwhelming emergency services.
Among the most concerning developments is the disappearance of over 20 individuals from a girls’ summer camp in the area. Search and rescue teams are currently combing the region by land, boat, and air.
“Dozens of Rescues”
Judge Rob Kelly, the county’s chief elected official, confirmed both the fatalities and the ongoing rescue operations, noting that “dozens of people have already been saved” from life-threatening floodwaters.
A flood watch had been issued on Thursday afternoon, with meteorologists warning of up to 7 inches of rainfall and fast-rising water levels. The worst-case scenarios have sadly materialised overnight.
Emergency Response Underway
Emergency crews continue to work in dangerous conditions to locate those missing and provide aid to affected communities. Many roads remain impassable, and authorities are urging residents to avoid low-lying areas and stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary.
This is a developing story and updates will follow as more information becomes available.
