A major grass fire has broken out next to the Ingrebourne River near Farm Road, Rainham, prompting a significant emergency response this evening.
The London Fire Brigade confirmed that eight fire engines have been deployed to tackle the rapidly spreading fire. The incident was first reported shortly before 5:00pm.
The fire is believed to be affecting a large area of grassland and scrub near the gates leading into fields off Farm Road.
The blaze is said to be dangerously close to the riverbank and nearby residential areas.
Residents urged to avoid the area
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said:
“Crews are currently working to bring a large grass fire under control in Rainham. Eight pumps are on scene near the Ingrebourne River. Please avoid the area and keep windows and doors shut if you live nearby.”
The fire has not yet been brought under control, and smoke can be seen drifting across parts of South Hornchurch and Rainham. No injuries have been reported so far.
Police and emergency services remain on site supporting traffic management and public safety.
