A murder investigation has been launched after a man was shot and killed in broad daylight outside a busy Costco superstore in Croydon.
The horrifying incident unfolded around 7pm on Thursday evening (June 19) in Imperial Way, near the Purley Way retail area. Emergency services raced to the scene after reports of gunfire, with police and ambulances quickly swarming the large car park.
Witnesses described scenes of chaos as shoppers fled for safety. One lorry driver, who was making a delivery at the time, recounted his shock as the brutal attack unfolded just metres away.
“I was dropping my load at the rear of the store when I saw a man running across the car park. Out of nowhere, another man opened fire – bang, bang. He shot him as he was trying to escape,” he said.
“People were screaming and diving for cover. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.”
The victim, believed to be in his 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene despite the efforts of paramedics. His identity has not yet been released.
The area remains cordoned off this evening, with a significant police presence and forensic teams examining the scene. A large crowd of bystanders gathered as the incident unfolded, with footage of the aftermath already circulating on social media.
The Metropolitan Police sources have confirmed a murder investigation is underway, though no arrests have been made at this stage.
A Source said: “We were called at 19:03hrs on Thursday, 19 June to reports of a man shot outside a business premises in Imperial Way, Croydon. Emergency services attended and found a man suffering gunshot injuries. Despite best efforts of paramedics, he was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. A crime scene is in place and enquiries are ongoing.”
London Ambulance Service also confirmed their attendance and said additional information will be released in due course.
This is the latest in a string of violent incidents to hit South London in recent weeks, prompting renewed calls for action on gun crime and public safety.
