West Midlands Police have launched a murder investigation after an 82-year-old man injured in a house fire earlier this month has tragically died in hospital.
Emergency services were called to a severe fire at a property on Holyhead Road, Wednesbury, in the early hours of Sunday, 11 May. Four individuals sustained serious injuries in the blaze, including John Edwards, 82, who had remained in hospital in critical condition. Police confirmed on Sunday, 25 May, that Mr Edwards had sadly passed away.
"Our thoughts are with Mr Edwards’ family at this difficult time. We remain in close contact with them and they are being supported by our specialist officers."
Suspect Previously Charged
As part of the investigation, Andrew Gorrell, 53, from Saltney, Chester, had already been charged with arson and three counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent. He appeared at Wolverhampton Magistrates’ Court and was remanded in custody. Following Mr Edwards’ death, West Midlands Police are now working closely with the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) to review and potentially upgrade the charges.
Three other people injured in the fire continue to fight for their lives and remain in critical but stable condition.
Witness Appeal
Police are urging anyone who was in the Holyhead Road area on the evening of Saturday 10 May or during the early hours of Sunday 11 May to come forward with information. Officers are particularly interested in any dashcam footage, doorbell video, or photos that could help piece together the events leading up to the fire.
An online portal has been set up for the public to submit digital evidence, and information can also be given by calling 101, quoting log 504 of 11 May.
