Zaine Reid Sentenced to Seven Years for Harrowing Campaign of Abuse
A Brighton man has been jailed for a series of violent and coercive offences, including rape and strangulation, following the sustained abuse of a teenage woman throughout much of 2024.
Zaine Reid, 20, of no fixed address, was sentenced to seven years in prison at Brighton Crown Court on Friday, 16 May, after being found guilty of multiple serious crimes.
Months of Abuse Uncovered
The victim, then in her late teens, bravely reported the abuse in September 2024, telling police about a prolonged period of violence, coercion, and sexual assault that began in February.
Reid’s campaign of control included:
- Isolating her from friends and family
- Monitoring her via surveillance cameras
- Emotional manipulation and threats of self-harm
- Rape coupled with strangulation, leaving her fearing for her life
After she ended the relationship, Reid accessed her social media accounts, deleting them to further isolate her.
Further Intimidation from Prison
While on remand, Reid attempted to intimidate the victim from custody, trying to pressure her into withdrawing from the police investigation. This resulted in an additional charge of witness intimidation.
He was convicted of the following offences on 18 March 2025:
- Rape
- Intentional strangulation
- Coercive and controlling behaviour
- Actual bodily harm (ABH)
- Witness intimidation
Police Praise Victim’s Courage
Speaking after sentencing, Detective Constable Ryan Dale said:
“I would like to thank the victim in this investigation for her remarkable strength and determination, in the face of Zaine Reid’s abuse and ongoing intimidation.
She has proven that Reid is not able to control her actions and, thanks to her, he is now behind bars. Sussex is a safer place as a result.”
He also encouraged other victims to speak out:
“If you are a victim of abuse, please know that help is available and there is an escape. Report to us discreetly online, via 101, or by dialling 999 in an emergency. We will do all we can to help and support you.”
