A 52-year-old man has been sentenced to 19 years in prison for a series of serious sexual offences after a courageous young victim came forward, triggering a major investigation and subsequent conviction at Sheffield Crown Court.
Alexander Sherwood, of Stanley Road, Liverpool, was convicted on 12 counts including four counts of rape, four of assault by penetration, and two of sexual assault by touching. His sentencing on 19 May 2025 marks the culmination of a police investigation launched by South Yorkshire Police’s Protecting Vulnerable People (PVP) team.
Timeline of the Case
- Initial Disclosure: The victim contacted the PVP team, which is specially trained to support vulnerable individuals.
- Arrest: Sherwood fled Rotherham and was located in Liverpool, where he was quickly apprehended by officers.
- Trial and Sentencing: Following a four-day trial in February, Sherwood was sentenced to 19 years, with an indefinite restraining order and a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO).
Police Praise Victim’s Courage
Detective Sergeant Fiona Trussell said:
“This outcome would not have been possible without the remarkable courage of the young victim. Their strength ensured this dangerous man was brought to justice.”
Sherwood’s conviction is a reminder of the importance of victim testimony, especially in sexual offence cases. According to the Crown Prosecution Service, survivor evidence is often pivotal in securing convictions where physical evidence may be limited.
Broader Context
Data from the National Sexual Violence Resource Center shows only 25% of reported sexual assaults lead to arrest, and even fewer reach conviction. This case stands out as a significant success for police and prosecutors.
Rape Crisis England & Wales praised the outcome, noting the victim’s willingness to disclose additional incidents during the investigation helped solidify the charges.
Safeguarding and Victim Support
Organisations such as Victim Support, NSPCC, and Barnardo’s continue to work with police and social services to assist survivors. South Yorkshire Police encourages any victims of sexual abuse to report offences and seek help via 101 or anonymously through Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.
