A 30-year-old man has been jailed for 12 years following his conviction for raping and sexually assaulting a teenage girl in Wakefield, in a case that underscores the ongoing battle against child sexual exploitation.
Awais Hamed, of Watson Crescent, Wakefield, was sentenced at Grimsby Crown Court after being found guilty of rape of a female over 16 and assault by penetration. The offences took place in December 2022, when Hamed plied the vulnerable teen with cocaine, heroin, and alcohol before committing the attacks.
The investigation, led by the Wakefield District Child Vulnerable to Exploitation Team (CVET), revealed that Hamed not only supplied the teenager with drugs but also gave her money to procure more, deepening her dependency and isolation.
In addition to the prison sentence, Hamed was placed under a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and will be registered as a sex offender for life.
Police Praise Victim’s Bravery
Detective Sergeant Kirsty Senior of West Yorkshire Police said:
“This young woman has shown extraordinary courage in coming forward and working with officers to bring her abuser to justice. Her bravery has helped secure a conviction and protected others from harm.”
Linked Offender Also Convicted
The case is part of a broader investigation into the exploitation of the same victim. In 2024, Nadeem Hussain, 47, was jailed for related offences. Both convictions stem from the efforts of the CVET, known for their expertise in safeguarding exploited children and bringing predators to justice.
Justice and Accountability
According to the Crown Prosecution Service, such crimes carry severe penalties due to their lasting psychological and physical impact on victims. Although only around 16% of sexual assaults are reported, CPS data shows that cases which go to trial have high conviction rates.
On social media platform X, users reacted to the verdict with support for the victim. One wrote, “Justice served for this brave survivor. Predators must face consequences.”
