A second man has been arrested in connection with a series of arson attacks across North London, all linked to properties associated with a high-profile public figure.
The 26-year-old suspect was detained at London Luton Airport at approximately 1:45pm on Saturday, 17 May, on suspicion of conspiracy to commit arson with intent to endanger life.
The arrest was carried out by counter terrorism officers from the Eastern Region Special Operations Unit. The man has since been transferred to a police station in London for questioning.
Background of the Arson Incidents
The arrest follows three arson incidents that occurred in North London earlier this month:
- 8 May – A vehicle fire in NW5
- 11 May – A fire at the entrance of a property in N7
- 12 May – A residential fire in NW5 during the early hours
All of these locations are understood to have ties to a well-known public figure, prompting the Metropolitan Police Counter Terrorism Command to lead the investigation due to potential risks to public safety and high-profile involvement.
Ongoing Counter Terrorism Investigation
A 21-year-old man has already been charged with three counts of arson with intent to endanger life and has appeared in court. Saturday’s arrest marks the second key development in this high-profile probe.
A spokesperson for the Met Police said:
“This is a complex and ongoing investigation. We’re working to establish the full facts and ensure the safety of all those potentially affected.”
The police continue to urge the public to come forward with any information, however minor, that could assist in the investigation.
