A major police operation at an animal rescue centre in Billericay has led to the discovery of 37 dead dogs and the seizure of 20 others, prompting an ongoing investigation into suspected animal cruelty and fraud.
The raid, which took place at a property in the Crays Hill area on Tuesday, May 13, involved Essex Police, the RSPCA, and Basildon Borough Council following numerous reports filed via Action Fraud.
Two men have been arrested on suspicion of fraud and failing to prevent unnecessary suffering to animals. Both remain in custody.
Inspector Steve Parry of Basildon’s neighbourhood policing team said:
“As a result of a number of reports relating to dogs, our officers worked with the RSPCA and Basildon Council to compile evidence, leading to the joint visit yesterday. We believe we’ve found the remains of 37 dogs and seized around 20 live dogs that are now being cared for.”
Authorities emphasised that efforts are now focused on identifying the last-known owners of the animals and determining the full extent of the suspected mistreatment.
A police presence remained in the area overnight, with the public urged to refrain from speculation as the investigation continues.
Basildon Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment & Leisure, Cllr Aidan McGurran, added:
“This is an ongoing police investigation and I would urge residents to refrain from speculating. We are working closely with the Police and RSPCA and will provide updates when we can.”
Council Leader Gavin Callaghan described the incident as “deeply distressing,” thanking police officers for their professionalism amid what he called an “incredibly difficult scene.”
The RSPCA confirmed that a number of ill and deceased dogs were discovered, with Dogs Trust also assisting in the joint operation. A spokesperson said:
“Sadly a number of ill and deceased dogs were found at the property. As this is an ongoing enquiry, we are unable to release further information at this time.”
Authorities say the investigation is expected to be complex and far-reaching. Further updates will be issued when appropriate.
