A child has died and several passengers have sustained serious injuries after a minibus overturned in a devastating single-vehicle crash on the M4 motorway in Berkshire this afternoon.
The crash happened around 2:40pm on Sunday, May 11, between junctions 11 (Reading) and 10 (Wokingham) on the eastbound carriageway. Both directions of the motorway remain closed to allow emergency services to respond.
Massive Emergency Response
Six ambulances, five critical care units, air ambulances, and multiple police and fire crews descended on the scene as the scale of the incident became clear.
A spokesperson for Thames Valley Police confirmed the fatality and added:
“Sadly, a child died in the collision and our thoughts remain with the family who are being supported at this extremely difficult time.”
The Royal Berkshire Fire & Rescue Service and Thames Valley Air Ambulance were also in attendance. Several injured passengers have been rushed to hospital for treatment.
Where Is the M4 Closed?
According to National Highways, the motorway is:
- Closed eastbound from J11 (Reading) to J10 (Wokingham)
- Closed westbound between J8/9 (Maidenhead) and J11
- A separate vehicle fire was also reported nearby between J7 and J8 westbound
Traffic queues stretched over three miles, with 30–50 minute delays, and severe congestion was compounded by broken-down vehicles in the backup.
Police Urge Drivers: Avoid the Area
Thames Valley Police issued a strong warning:
“We would ask motorists to continue to avoid the area. The closure is likely to remain in place for the foreseeable future.”
Road diversions have been activated, but travel chaos continues to affect surrounding routes including the A329M, A308M, and A404M.
