A man has been charged with the rape and murder of 37-year-old Joanna Derkacz, whose body was discovered in a Hampshire home in December.
Police were called to a property on Nevinson Way, Waterlooville, at 11:30am on Thursday, 28 December 2023, where they found Joanna deceased. A man at the scene was treated for arm injuries before being arrested on suspicion of coercive or controlling behaviour and criminal damage.
Following months of investigation and a Home Office post-mortem, Stephen Edward Sexton, 37, of Cherrywood Gardens, Totton, has now been charged with rape and murder.
He is due to appear at Southampton Magistrates’ Court on Saturday, 10 May.
Family and Friends Pay Tribute
Joanna’s grieving family paid heartfelt tributes to the Polish-born recruitment consultant, describing her as a “special daughter, auntie, and sister.” Her sister shared an emotional poem, vowing to fight for justice:
“We will love you always sweet angel… I’ll fight for the justice till my last breath. I promise.”
Friend Viola Signejeva said:
“She was always a source of positivity, energy, and enthusiasm. It’s too early for her. Rest in peace, Jo.”
Another friend, Aniya Malkosz, added:
“Nothing will ever be the same without you here… Goodbye, Sunshine.”

A Hampshire Police spokesperson said:
“A detailed investigation has been undertaken to establish what happened and how Joanna died. Expert evidence led to the decision to bring these charges.”
Sexton remains in custody and will be brought before magistrates on 10 May, with the case expected to move to crown court for further hearings.
