Arriva has announced the temporary suspension of evening services on its Route 482 bus between Gravesend and Kings Farm following a spate of serious incidents involving objects being thrown at buses, including one that left a small child at risk.
The most recent incident, described by the company as “deeply concerning,” saw a bus window smashed by a thrown object, sending shattered glass into the vehicle. A small child in a buggy was reportedly showered in the debris, though thankfully, no serious injuries were sustained.
In response, Arriva has made the difficult decision to alter its timetable, with the final evening departures from Gravesend now scheduled as follows:
- Weekdays: Last bus at 17:47
- Weekends: Last bus at 17:35
Safety Comes First
A spokesperson for Arriva stated:
“This is not a decision that has been taken lightly, and we understand the inconvenience this may cause to our customers. However, the safety of our customers and drivers must come first.”
The company is currently working with Kent Police to identify the culprits and put an end to the dangerous behaviour.
Service Suspension Could Become Permanent
The bus operator has stressed that the suspension is temporary, with the aim of restoring full evening service by Sunday, 4 May. However, they warned that continued attacks may force them to permanently withdraw evening journeys on the route.
Community Reaction
News of the suspension has prompted strong reactions from the community. Local residents have expressed concern over both the safety of public transport and the impact of service cuts on evening commuters, students, and vulnerable passengers.
One Gravesend parent, who uses the route regularly, said:
“It’s terrifying to think that a child could be hurt just riding a bus. But cutting off service early is going to make life very hard for families who rely on it.”
Appeal for Witnesses
Kent Police are urging anyone with information about the incidents to come forward. Witnesses or those with CCTV or dashcam footage from affected areas are asked to contact authorities or Crimestoppers anonymously.
