A person has tragically died after being struck by a train near Staplehurst railway station on Saturday night (April 19), prompting widespread rail disruption and a response from emergency services.
Emergency crews were called to the scene at approximately 9.45pm, following reports of a casualty on the tracks between Ashford and Paddock Wood. Southeastern initially cited “safety inspections” along the line, but within half an hour confirmed that a person had been hit by a train.
British Transport Police (BTP) and paramedics attended, but the individual was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the deceased has not yet been released.
In a statement issued this morning, a BTP spokesperson said:
“Officers were called to Staplehurst railway station at around 9.45pm on Saturday, April 19 following reports of a casualty on the tracks. Paramedics also attended, however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident is not being treated as suspicious, and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”
The railway’s electricity supply was temporarily shut off while emergency services worked at the scene. Crews remained on site until shortly before 1am, with services suspended or delayed across parts of the network throughout the evening.
Rail operator Southeastern advised passengers to check for updates before travelling, as the line between Ashford and Paddock Wood was closed for several hours.
A number of rail replacement services were made available as the incident was dealt with.
