A murder investigation is underway following the death of 35-year-old Joe Buchanan during a disturbance in the quiet village of Douglas, near Lanark, on Saturday night.
Police were called to Springhill Street at around 8:35pm on 13 April 2025, following reports of a violent incident. Emergency services attended the scene, but Mr Buchanan was pronounced dead shortly after.
His family has been informed, and a post-mortem examination is scheduled to determine the exact cause of death. At this time, officers are treating the death as suspicious.
Murder Inquiry and Community Impact
The incident has deeply shocked the local community. A large police cordon was put in place on Springhill Street as forensic teams carried out a detailed examination of the scene.
Detective Inspector Mark McGraw, from Police Scotland’s Major Investigation Team, is leading the murder inquiry.
“We believe this was a targeted attack, and there is no wider threat to the public. Everything is being done to trace those responsible.”
Inspector Mark Chivers added:
“We know this incident will cause concern within the local community, and residents can expect to see an increased police presence in the area in the coming days. Please speak to officers if you have any concerns or information that could help us.”

Police are conducting door-to-door enquiries and reviewing CCTV from nearby properties and public spaces. Officers are appealing specifically for anyone who was in the Springhill Street area between 8:20pm and 8:40pm on Saturday night to come forward.
