A heroic bystander has spoken out after restraining a driver involved in a horrific high-speed crash in Islington that left a female Uber passenger with life-changing injuries.
The crash, described by witnesses as “brutal,” happened early on Thursday 10th of April 2025 around 8am.
A vehicle reportedly accelerated at speed and T-boned an Uber taxi waiting at the junction to turn.

Inside the Uber were the driver and a woman in the rear passenger seat, who sustained severe injuries in the impact on the A1 Upper Street between Canonbury Lane and Barnsbury Street
Emergency services, including crews from the London Fire Brigade, paramedics, and units from the London Ambulance Service, were quickly dispatched to the scene. Firefighters made the area safe as medics treated the injured. A full investigation into the crash has been launched by collision specialists from the Metropolitan Police’s Alperton Traffic Garage.

A bystander, a local maintenance worker who asked not to be named, intervened immediately after witnessing the collision.
“He looked crazed—his eyes were glazed over. I swear he was on something,” the man said of the driver. “I pinned him down and waited for the police. It felt like forever for them to arrive. The woman didn’t look good at all. I really hope she makes it.”

The Uber driver, visibly shaken, told witnesses that the crash “felt like it happened in slow motion.” The side of the vehicle was left completely crushed by the force of the impact and the front narrowly missed a the cafe shop front.
The man who was driving the car that struck the Uber was checked by paramedics at the scene and is currently in police custody. Investigators are working to determine whether drugs or alcohol were a factor.
The Metropolitan Police and London Ambulance Service have both been contacted for official statements.
This remains a developing story, and updates will follow as more information is released.
