A newly qualified driver is facing a hefty penalty after being stopped on the A57 in a BMW with no front number plate — only for police to also discover three bald tyres, prompting widespread disbelief online.
Officers from the local roads policing unit pulled over the vehicle during a routine traffic stop and were met with a series of safety violations, putting both the driver and other road users at risk.
New Driver Faces Serious Penalties
The driver, who had only recently passed his driving test, is now facing a likely 9 points on their licence, which could result in an immediate ban under new driver rules. New motorists who accumulate six or more penalty points within the first two years of obtaining their licence face having it revoked.
Officers shared details of the stop on social media with a hint of humour and frustration, writing:
"This BMW was stopped on the A57 for no front number plate and found to have 3 bald tyres ?♂️ Having only recently passed his driving test ?♂️ and a likely 9 points incoming, these Hot Wheels in the back are perhaps all he will be driving soon ??♂️?⚖️"
A photo shared by the officers showed a toy Hot Wheels car in the vehicle’s back seat, a playful jab at the likelihood the driver will soon be off the road.
Road Safety Warning
Bald tyres are a serious safety hazard, significantly reducing grip and increasing the risk of accidents — particularly in wet conditions. Driving with tyres below the legal tread depth limit of 1.6mm can also result in a fine of up to £2,500 per tyre and 3 penalty points per offence.
Public Reaction
Social media users reacted with disbelief and frustration, with one commenter writing: "How do you pass a test and think this is acceptable?" while another added: "He’ll be back on a pushbike in no time."
Police Reminder
Authorities are urging all drivers — especially new ones — to regularly check the condition of their tyres, lights, and number plates to avoid similar costly mistakes.
"This is about more than just a fine — it’s about road safety," said one officer. "Don’t cut corners when it comes to vehicle maintenance."
