Former Formula 1 team boss, television pundit, and entrepreneur Eddie Jordan has died at the age of 76, his family have announced.
The charismatic Irishman, affectionately known as “EJ”, passed away peacefully in the early hours of Thursday morning (20 March) in Cape Town, surrounded by family. He had been battling an aggressive form of prostate and bladder cancer, which had spread to his spine and pelvis.
A statement released by the Jordan family read:
“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Eddie Jordan OBE, the ex-Formula 1 team owner, TV pundit and entrepreneur.
He passed away peacefully with family by his side in Cape Town in the early hours of 20th March 2025 at the age of 76, after battling with an aggressive form of prostate cancer for the past 12 months.
EJ brought an abundance of charisma, energy and Irish charm everywhere he went. We all have a huge hole missing without his presence. He will be missed by so many people, but he leaves us with tonnes of great memories to keep us smiling through our sorrow.”
Jordan was best known for founding Jordan Grand Prix, the team that debuted in Formula 1 in 1991 and went on to become one of the most colourful and well-loved teams of the era. Under his leadership, the team achieved its most famous victory in 1998, when Damon Hill secured a win at the Belgian Grand Prix.
After stepping back from team management, Jordan became a familiar face on TV screens as a pundit and analyst, bringing his trademark energy and insight to Formula 1 coverage on the BBC and Channel 4.
Tributes have poured in from across the motorsport world. The official Formula 1 X (formerly Twitter) account shared a statement from F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali, who said:
“We are deeply saddened to hear about the sudden loss of Eddie Jordan.
With his inexhaustible energy, he always knew how to make people smile, remaining genuine and brilliant at all times.
Eddie has been a protagonist of an era of F1 and he will be deeply missed. In this moment of sorrow, my thoughts and those of the entire Formula 1 family are with his family and loved ones.”
Jordan’s legacy in motorsport and broadcasting leaves an indelible mark on Formula 1 history. He is remembered not only for his business acumen and racing achievements but also for his larger-than-life personality, flamboyant style, and unmistakable Irish charm.
He is survived by his wife, Marie, and their children.
