A Royal Navy recruit has tragically died during training at a military base in Cornwall, prompting an official investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The recruit passed away on Tuesday, March 11, at HMS Raleigh, the Royal Navy’s primary training establishment located in Torpoint.
In a statement released by the Royal Navy, officials confirmed the fatality and expressed condolences to the family and colleagues of the deceased.
“It is with great sadness that we can confirm that a member of the Royal Navy died at HMS Raleigh following routine training on Tuesday, March 11,” a spokesperson said.
“Our thoughts are with the family and all those affected at this sad time. An investigation into the circumstances will take place, and it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.”
The identity of the recruit has not been made public, and the cause of death has not yet been disclosed. The incident has deeply affected fellow trainees and personnel at the base, where support is reportedly being offered to those impacted.
HMS Raleigh is the Royal Navy’s basic training facility, where new recruits undergo rigorous physical and operational training as part of their entry into service.
The Ministry of Defence is expected to conduct a full inquiry to determine whether any procedural failings or health and safety concerns contributed to the death.
Further details are likely to emerge once the investigation is underway.
