A man from Devon has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after being found guilty of multiple child sexual offences, including rape.
Kevin Benham, 67, of Cornborough Road, Westward Ho!, was convicted of five counts of rape and three counts of sexual assault on two child victims, following a trial held in January. He was remanded into custody following the guilty verdicts and appeared for sentencing at Exeter Crown Court on Tuesday, March 18.
The offences, described by prosecutors as “deeply disturbing,” involved sustained abuse over a period of time, leaving a lasting impact on the young victims. During the trial, the court heard harrowing details of the assaults, which prompted strong condemnation from the judge and investigating officers.
Passing sentence, the judge remarked on the serious nature and gravity of the crimes, highlighting the significant emotional and psychological harm inflicted on the victims.
A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police praised the bravery of the victims who came forward to give evidence, stating:
“This sentence reflects the horrific nature of Benham’s actions. We commend the courage shown by the victims throughout the investigation and trial process. We hope this verdict brings them some measure of justice and closure.”
Benham’s case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of reporting sexual abuse, no matter when it occurred. Authorities continue to encourage anyone affected by such crimes to seek support and report concerns to police or specialist agencies.
Support is available for survivors of abuse through local and national organisations. Anyone with information about sexual offences can contact police on 101 or speak anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
