A major emergency response was launched this afternoon following reports of an explosion and large fire at the Detling Aerodrome Industrial Estate near Maidstone, prompting road closures and warnings to nearby residents.
The A249 Detling Hill was closed in both directions between Scragged Oak Road and Rumstead Lane from around 2:10pm, as fire crews battled a significant blaze that sent plumes of smoke across the area.
The road has now reopened, but drivers are still being urged to exercise caution.
Loud Bang Heard Before Fire Erupted
Local residents reported hearing a loud bang, which was followed by thick smoke billowing from the industrial site.
It is understood that an “explosion” took place within an out building at the estate just off the busy A249.
Due to the heavy smoke, those living near Detling Hill and the surrounding areas have been advised to keep their windows and doors closed as a precaution.
A spokesperson for Kent Fire and Rescue Service said:
“Crews are working hard to bring the fire under control. We’re asking people to avoid the area and to share this message with anyone nearby who may not have internet access.”
Firefighters are tackling the blaze using breathing apparatus, main jet hoses, and advanced firefighting equipment, including robotic assistance.
Unknown if Any Injuries Reported
As of now, it is not known whether anyone has been injured in the incident. Emergency services remain on site, and investigations into the cause of the explosion and subsequent fire are underway.
Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
