Less than two years after former firefighter Sasha Acheson won a significant tribunal highlighting systemic failings to protect women at Avon Fire and Rescue Service, serious concerns remain unaddressed. Despite the public tribunal victory in December 2023, control room staff are now threatening a mass exodus, citing ongoing misogynistic behaviour, bullying, and discrimination.
In response to the 2023 tribunal in Bristol, Avon Fire and Rescue acknowledged that it was “deeply regrettable” Ms. Acheson experienced “inappropriate behaviour.” However, staff have reported that no meaningful changes have occurred, prompting renewed frustration and concern over the toxic workplace culture.
Critics question the effectiveness of tribunals and culture reviews when those responsible for perpetuating misogyny remain in positions of authority while women continue to leave the service.
Calls for decisive action and substantial change grow louder, underscoring the urgent need for Avon Fire and Rescue Service to move beyond empty promises and implement genuine reforms to create a safe and equitable workplace for all employees.
