A “bubbly” mother was tragically shot dead at point-blank range on her doorstep in Talbot Green, Wales, in a shocking daylight attack that has left the community reeling.
Joanne Penney, 40, was pronounced dead at the scene after emergency services rushed to the Llys Maelwg block in Green Park at around 6.10pm on Sunday evening (March 9). Neighbours described hearing a single gunshot, moments before armed police swooped on the estate.
The mother-of-one, believed to have a 10-year-old son, had recently moved into the flat to stay with a friend. Police have arrested a 42-year-old man from Talbot Green on suspicion of murder, who remains in custody.
Murder Probe Launched
A murder investigation is now underway, with crime scenes cordoned off across the estate and a team of detectives working to establish a motive.
Some neighbours have speculated that the killing may have been a case of mistaken identity, with Joanne potentially “answering the door to the wrong person at the wrong time.”
A neighbour, Rebecca Morris, described Joanne as a “bubbly character” and said, “She was a popular person who will be missed dearly. I’ll be going down to lay flowers shortly.”
Another resident said Joanne had moved in around Christmas time and was relatively new to the area, adding, “We can’t think why anyone would target her — this is just shocking.”
Terrified Community Reacts
Residents were left stunned as police helicopters circled overhead, and the usually quiet estate was flooded with emergency services.
Local resident Calum Williams said: “It’s terrible. I live just two doors down. I was making a bottle for the baby when I heard a gunshot. It’s frightening.”
Carolyn Pugh, who lives nearby, recalled the moment police arrived: “Within seconds they were everywhere. I’ve lived here 28 years and it’s never been like this.”
Anthony Dando, 59, added: “We’ve had trouble before, but never anything like this. A gun attack is terrifying — right on our doorsteps.”
Police Statement and Appeal
Detective Chief Inspector James Morris, leading the investigation, said:
“I understand the concern this will cause the local community, and I want to reassure people that a team of experienced detectives are already working at pace to piece together the events of last night.”
A number of crime scenes remain in place as officers continue forensic investigations and house-to-house enquiries.

She also thanked emergency services for their swift response.
