A grim discovery near a Morrisons store in Stoke-on-Trent has prompted a full-scale police investigation after a passerby stumbled upon human skeletal remains. Authorities cordoned off part of Festival Park as forensic teams and investigators flocked to the scene.
Staffordshire Police were alerted to the disturbing find at approximately 3:40 PM on Sunday after a member of the public spotted what appeared to be human bones on a wooded area near Festival Park. The site, located adjacent to a Morrisons superstore and several retail outlets, has since been sealed off as police work to uncover the mystery surrounding the remains.
Forensic Investigation Underway
As of Monday morning, police confirmed that the remains are human but have not yet been formally identified. A heavy police presence remains at the scene, with four police vehicles and a large blue forensic tent erected in the wooded area. Specialist forensic officers, dressed in white protective suits, have been seen entering and exiting the tent as they conduct meticulous examinations.
A spokesperson for Staffordshire Police provided an update, stating: “We were called to reports of skeletal remains found by a member of the public on land near Festival Park. We can now confirm that the remains are human but, at this time, have not been formally identified.”
The police reassured local residents, adding: “Although this is an unsettling discovery, we have a visible presence in the area to investigate, provide reassurance, and to listen to any concerns.”
Crime Scene Secured, Investigation Ongoing
The investigation is expected to take some time as forensic experts work to determine how long the remains have been at the site and whether foul play is suspected. The cordon extends to a path between Morrisons and other parts of Festival Park, restricting access to certain areas.
Local businesses and shoppers have expressed shock at the discovery. One shopper, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “It’s terrifying to think something like this has been here all this time. I walk through this park regularly – it’s unsettling.”
Authorities are appealing to the public for any information that may aid their investigation. Anyone with relevant details is urged to contact Staffordshire Police at 101, quoting incident number 397 of March 2.
As forensic teams continue their search for answers, the community remains on edge, waiting for updates on the mystery surrounding the skeletal remains found in the heart of Festival Park.
