A mother gave birth in a hospital car park with the unexpected help of security staff at University Hospital Lewisham after going into active labour moments before reaching the maternity ward.
The extraordinary birth took place on January 26, 2025, when new mum Odia arrived at the hospital at 9:30 am with her partner, Obi. However, before she could make it inside, she felt the baby coming immediately.
Security Officer Steps in as Emergency Midwife
Security officer Ade Oloye, who was on patrol at the time, noticed the couple in distress and rushed over to help. Obi explained that his wife was already in labour and needed to get to the Lewisham Birth Centre.
Realizing there was no time to spare, Ade radioed for backup from security site supervisor Mohammed Elamine Chabat, but within moments, it became clear that the baby was arriving then and there.
With no medical staff immediately available, Ade stepped beyond his usual duties to assist Odia in delivering her daughter in the car park.
A Swift and Safe Delivery
Within minutes, Odia gave birth to a healthy baby girl, later named Ocean, with the support of Obi and Ade.
When Mohammed arrived moments later, he was surprised to see baby Ocean already safely in her father’s arms.
Ade immediately contacted the emergency department while Mohammed ensured that both mother and baby were stable. Given the cold weather, the security team wrapped them in blankets and provided reassurance until medical staff arrived.
Both mother and baby were then taken inside the hospital for medical checks before being discharged home together.
New Mum’s Heartfelt Thanks
Reflecting on the incredible moment, new mum Odia expressed her gratitude to the hospital security team:
“I gave birth on Sunday morning in the hospital car park. Since it was early, there were not many people around to help when we needed it.”
“Luckily, Ade from the security team was on patrol at the time. He quickly noticed our situation and did not hesitate to assist us.”
“Ade showed great care and compassion, which we appreciate, as we were in such a vulnerable position.”
“I also want to thank the other security guards and NHS workers who rushed to provide additional support when Ade radioed for help. Brilliant service from everyone involved at LGT.”
Security Officers Reflect on Special Moment
LGT’s security officer Ade Oloye described the experience as intense yet emotional, saying:
“Being part of this amazing birth story as a security officer was both intense and emotional.”
“I felt an immense sense of pride in being able to help at such a crucial moment and play a role in the delivery of baby Ocean.
“This was a reminder that security colleagues play a much broader role in ensuring the well-being of people—not just through protection, but also by offering care and compassion when it matters most. It really is all in a day’s work for us.
Security supervisor Mohammed Elamine Chabat added:
“Throughout the situation, we focused on keeping the mother calm, offering support, and even sharing a light-hearted moment—we told her that, in addition to being security officers, we were now midwives too!”
“The LGT security team is proud to have been part of such a special moment and remains committed to providing safety, support, and kindness in all situations to our patients.”
A Happy Ending
Now, one month on, baby Ocean and her parents are doing well and wanted to share their remarkable birth story.
Their experience highlights not only the dedication of NHS staff but also the invaluable role security teams play in hospitals, ensuring both safety and support in unexpected moments.
