Call the Midwife star Stephen McGann has teased an exciting surprise for fans ahead of the season 14 finale, revealing that a beloved character will be making a return to Poplar this weekend.
Sister Hilda Makes a Comeback
During an appearance on This Morning, McGann, who plays Dr Patrick Turner in the hit BBC period drama, shared the news with hosts Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard.
“There are things that happen, which we’re not telling you,” McGann teased, before confirming that Sister Hilda, played by Fenella Woolgar, will make a long-awaited return in the final episode.
“One of the old sisters, Sister Hilda, played by the brilliant Fenella Woolgar, comes back into the series, so you will see her again. There’s a sense of things being rounded up beautifully, but there’s also, as you know with Call the Midwife, there’s drama there, too. There’s heartache, as well.”
Megan Cusack Departs After Four Years
The finale will also mark the departure of Megan Cusack, who has played Nancy Corrigan for four years. Nancy, who has been absent from much of the current series, is set to marry Roger Noble (Conor O’Donnell) in a heartwarming farewell storyline.
Nancy and Roger’s exit storyline was set in motion during the 2024 Christmas special, when the couple left for Surrey, hinting at a fresh start.
A Rain-Soaked Wedding Inspired by Real Life
McGann hinted at an emotional wedding scene in the finale, revealing that his wife Heidi Thomas, who created the series, drew inspiration from their son’s wedding day.
“What I can tell you, and I’m trying not to give spoilers,” he said. “There’s a sequence on the big day which involves rain pouring down. My son was married last year, and when we were arriving, it was absolutely in torrents of rain. I think Heidi drew a little inspiration from that.”
What to Expect in the Season 14 Finale
While McGann remained tight-lipped about other plot details, he promised a “beautiful” and “dramatic” final episode that will include plenty of joy, heartbreak, and surprises.
The Call the Midwife season 14 finale will air on Sunday, March 2, at 8pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
