Motorists are facing significant delays on the M25 this afternoon after a multi-vehicle collision forced the closure of three lanes near Heathrow Airport.
National Highways: East reported that lanes 2, 3, and 4 on the M25 clockwise within Junction 14, close to Heathrow, have been shut following the incident. Emergency services, including police, fire crews, and paramedics, are currently on the scene, alongside National Highways traffic officers.
The collision, which occurred around 2:30 PM, has resulted in severe congestion, with traffic already backing up for three miles on approach. National Highways estimates delays of at least 25 minutes above the usual travel time for drivers in the area.
A spokesperson for National Highways urged drivers to exercise caution: “We advise motorists to plan their journeys carefully, expect delays, and consider alternative routes if possible. Emergency services are working hard to clear the scene and reopen lanes as quickly and safely as possible.”
Impact on Heathrow Airport Traffic
Given the proximity of the incident to Heathrow Airport, travelers heading to the airport are being warned to allow extra time for their journeys. With many vehicles stuck in the growing queues, there is concern that the delays could affect flight check-ins and departures for some passengers.
Heathrow Airport issued a statement on social media, advising passengers: “Due to a multi-vehicle collision on the M25 near Junction 14, we recommend allowing extra travel time if you’re heading to the airport. Please check with your airline for any updates on your flight.”
Emergency Services at the Scene
Details regarding injuries from the collision have not yet been confirmed. Paramedics from the London Ambulance Service are on-site assessing those involved, while fire crews are assisting in clearing damaged vehicles from the carriageway.
A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: “We are currently assisting with a multi-vehicle collision on the M25 near Junction 14. Traffic is heavily congested in the area, and we urge drivers to remain patient and follow instructions from officers and traffic marshals.”
Alternative Routes and Travel Advice
National Highways has advised drivers to consider using the M4 or A312 as alternative routes to bypass the affected section of the M25. Real-time traffic updates are being provided via social media and traffic apps.
Drivers stuck in the congestion are being reminded to stay inside their vehicles unless directed otherwise by emergency services and to keep the hard shoulder clear for emergency vehicles.
