A quick-thinking employee from the Maidstone Living store has been praised as a hero after saving a man who fell into the River Medway behind the store during recent bad weather.
Dan, who works at the store, noticed the man struggling in the fast-flowing, swollen river and immediately sprang into action. He threw a life ring to the man and held on to the rope with all his strength while calling emergency services for assistance.
A Tense Rescue
Describing the dramatic rescue, Dan said:
“The rope had actually cut into my hands and I had burns too because I was holding on so hard. If I’d have let go, then it would have been it.”
As firefighters arrived with a telescopic ladder, Dan continued to hold on, giving the man a lifeline until he was able to climb onto the ladder and out of the water.
Dan modestly downplayed his actions, stating:
“I don’t think what I did was heroic; anyone would have done the same. It’s human nature to help others. I was at the right place at the right time.”
Praise from Colleagues
Dan’s bravery has been widely recognized by his colleagues and the community. Store manager Paul described Dan as a true hero, saying:
“We are all so very proud of Dan. He really is a hero.”
A Reminder of Selfless Actions
The incident highlights the importance of quick action and selflessness in emergencies. Thanks to Dan’s efforts and the support of the emergency services, the man was safely rescued.
The Maidstone Living store and its team are celebrating Dan’s actions, which have been described as a shining example of courage and compassion.
