Three men suspected of burgling a property and stealing a works van from Rochester on New Year’s Day were tracked down by a police dog in a dramatic operation.
Burglary and Vehicle Theft Reported
The incident unfolded at around 9 AM on January 1, 2025, when a works van was reported stolen from a property in Star Hill, Rochester. According to police, the vehicle’s keys had been taken during a burglary before the suspects drove off with the van.
Tracking the Suspects
A police investigation was immediately launched, and on Saturday, January 4, officers traced the van after it was seen travelling along the M2 before stopping at Medway Services.
Upon arriving at the service station’s parking area, officers found the van abandoned and immediately deployed Police Dog Billy to track the suspects.
Suspects Found Hiding Behind Rubbish Bins
PD Billy led officers from the stolen van to three men, who were discovered hiding behind rubbish bins in the vicinity.
Further searches revealed that the stolen van’s key had been discarded on the ground nearby, linking the men directly to the crime.
Arrests and Ongoing Investigation
The three suspects, aged between 24 and 48, were arrested at the scene. They have since been conditionally bailed while forensic investigations continue.
A spokesperson for the Kent Police praised the efforts of PD Billy and the proactive patrol teams, stating:
“This was an excellent example of how specialist police units work together to track down offenders. The use of a police dog proved instrumental in quickly locating and arresting the suspects.”
