The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched an investigation following the circulation of a video showing police officers allegedly hitting and kicking a man during an arrest at Manchester Airport.
The incident, which took place near the airport’s bus terminal around 1 pm on Sunday, December 29, 2024, was captured by a holidaymaker and later shared online. The footage appears to show officers restraining a man on the ground, with one officer reportedly punching and kicking him multiple times. Other officers are seen pinning the man’s head and feet while he appears to resist arrest.
According to Greater Manchester Police (GMP), officers were responding to reports of a man being drunk and disorderly after being denied entry onto a bus and causing a disturbance. The man allegedly resisted arrest, prompting officers to call for backup.
In the video, one officer is seen hitting the man in the stomach and legs several times, while another appears to strike his face. The footage has drawn significant attention online, sparking public concern over the use of force during the arrest.
Investigation Underway
The IOPC has confirmed contact with GMP to determine whether any complaints have been filed or if the incident warrants a formal referral. A spokesperson for the watchdog stated, “We are aware of footage circulating on social media and are working to establish the facts surrounding the incident.”
GMP has also launched an internal review through its Professional Standards Unit. A spokesperson said, “We understand the concerns around the use of force shown in the clip. All available footage, including officers’ body-worn cameras and CCTV, is being reviewed as part of our investigation.”
Public Reaction
The footage has sparked mixed reactions online, with some condemning the officers’ actions while others emphasized the challenges police face in managing resistance during arrests.
No formal complaints have been filed by the man involved or members of the public at this stage. It is understood that the man was arrested and taken into custody following the incident.
The IOPC and GMP have urged anyone with additional footage or information about the incident to come forward as investigations continue.
