A video has surfaced showing Greater Manchester Police (GMP) officers allegedly punching and kicking a man during an arrest at Manchester Airport. The footage, filmed by a holidaymaker shows the man being restrained by multiple officers at a bus stop in the airport’s terminal.
Incident Details
The arrest occurred at approximately 1 PM on Sunday, December 29, at the airport’s bus station. In the video, three officers are seen restraining the man, with one appearing to punch and kick him while holding a pair of handcuffs. Another officer, restraining the man’s head, is also seen striking him.
Later footage shows five officers holding the man on the ground during the arrest. The man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly.
GMP Statement
Greater Manchester Police has confirmed it is reviewing the incident. A spokesperson said:
“We are currently reviewing a video published online showing the arrest of a man at Manchester Airport’s bus terminal yesterday afternoon (Sunday). We understand the concerns around the use of force shown on the clip, and our professional standards unit is assessing all available footage, including the officers’ body-worn cameras and CCTV.”
The force emphasized that a thorough investigation will be conducted to ensure appropriate action is taken if necessary.
Background and Context
This incident comes just five months after another widely circulated video involving GMP officers led to public protests. That incident occurred in July, and while two members of the public were charged with assaults on police officers, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) decided not to bring charges against the officers involved.
The new footage has sparked renewed scrutiny over the use of force by law enforcement officers.
Public Reaction
The video has generated significant attention online, with many questioning the officers’ actions during the arrest. GMP has urged the public to await the findings of its investigation before drawing conclusions.
Further updates will be provided as the investigation into this incident continues.
