The Northern rail network is experiencing significant disruption on Sunday as Storm Darragh continues to batter the region.
Passengers are facing major travel challenges, with multiple routes severely impacted by the extreme weather conditions. The most notable disruptions include:
Leeds to Doncaster Route
Significant damage to overhead electric wires near Wakefield Westgate has caused widespread train cancellations. Network Rail reports that fallen trees are responsible for the infrastructure damage, creating substantial challenges for rail travel in the area.
Middlesbrough to Whitby Line
Services between Middlesbrough and Whitby have been completely suspended due to severe weather conditions. The disruption is expected to continue until at least 12:00 today, with replacement road transport arranged to assist stranded passengers.
Travel Assistance Measures
In response to the widespread disruption, Northern has implemented exceptional travel measures:
- All advanced ticket restrictions have been lifted
- Passengers can use their Northern tickets on alternative services from:
- TransPennine Express
- Avanti West Coast
- East Midlands Railway
- CrossCountry
Network Rail engineers are currently on-site assessing flood damage and working to restore services as quickly as possible.
