Police Issue Warning After Distraction Theft in Folkestone

Kent Police have issued a warning to residents following a reported distraction theft in a Folkestone fast food outlet.

An iPhone was allegedly stolen from a woman dining at McDonald’s on West Terrace on Monday, November 18, 2024. The theft reportedly occurred between 3 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Details of the Incident

A teenage boy approached the victim and her friend, attempting to engage them in conversation. The suspect is believed to have placed a piece of paper over the woman’s mobile phone, which was on the table. When he left, he allegedly took both the paper and the phone, using the paper to conceal the device.

The suspect is described as approximately 17 years old, of mixed race, with short dark brown or black hair, and wearing black clothing.

Police Advice

Detective Inspector Carlo Capozzi said:

“While my officers are investigating this report, I would urge people to be particularly careful with personal property when out in public, and when approached by someone they do not know.

“Don’t be afraid to check that your valuables are secure before considering whether you wish to engage in conversation. Never leave valuables unattended, even for a few moments.

“Don’t advertise your phone to thieves by leaving it on display – keep your belongings tucked away safely, in a zipped pocket or bag. Consider enabling mobile phone tracking apps, which can help you locate your device if it is lost or stolen.”
