Detectives from Dorset Police’s Major Crime Investigation Team are continuing their probe into the unexplained deaths of three residents at a Swanage care facility, officials announced today.
The investigation stems from an incident reported on October 23, 2024, when authorities were alerted to three deaths at the Gainsborough Care Home on Ulwell Road. The deceased include two male residents, aged 74 and 91, and an 86-year-old female resident.
A 60-year-old local woman who was initially arrested on suspicion of manslaughter has been released from the investigation without charge following detailed investigative work.
Detective Chief Inspector Neil Third stressed that establishing the cause of death remains a priority. “We are working closely with HM Coroner and awaiting results from detailed forensic submissions and analysis, which could take several months to complete,” he stated.
DCI Third added that while the initial arrest was necessary to gather evidence and assess potential negligence, investigators have concluded there is insufficient evidence to support such charges.
“The deceased and their loved ones remain at the forefront of our minds throughout our investigation,” Third said, noting that families of the deceased are being kept informed of any developments.
The deaths continue to be treated as unexplained while authorities await forensic results. Police have indicated they will provide updates as the investigation progresses.
