A lorry driver from southeast London, Janis Rimovics, 50, has been jailed after a dangerous, alcohol-fueled drive in Sussex that ended with him crashing into a parked car and getting stuck in a busy holiday park. Rimovics, who lives in Feltham, was found to be more than three times over the legal alcohol limit.
On August 25, Rimovics was driving his 44-tonne articulated lorry in Pagham, Sussex, when he struck a parked vehicle on Church Lane. He then sped into a nearby holiday park, endangering families and children. Despite efforts to reverse the lorry out of the park, Rimovics ultimately had to be persuaded by bystanders to stop, and police were called.
When officers arrived, Rimovics was so intoxicated that he could barely stand and later fell asleep in the cab of his vehicle. Inside, officers found empty vodka bottles, and Rimovics provided a breath sample with an alcohol level of 128 microgrammes per 100 millilitres of breath — far exceeding the legal limit of 35μg.
Rimovics was charged with dangerous driving and driving under the influence. He appeared at Portsmouth Crown Court on October 18, where he was sentenced to four months in prison and disqualified from driving for 18 months.
Acting Sergeant Steven Lambeth from the Roads Policing Unit commented, “Rimovics was in charge of a large lorry while more than three times the legal alcohol limit. He posed a serious risk not only to himself but to every other road user. We are pleased that a dangerous driver has been taken off our roads.”
