A man has died in hospital nearly two weeks after he suffered severe burns during a self-immolation incident on a boat in Pittwater, near Scotland Island in Sydney’s north. NSW Police have launched an investigation to understand the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
The incident occurred on October 9, when emergency services responded to a welfare concern for the 61-year-old man on a boat at approximately 2:55 pm. Sydney Water Police spoke with the man, who had reportedly activated an EPIRB emergency device, signalling distress.
During the interaction, the man allegedly picked up a jerry can, poured its contents over himself, and ignited the liquid with a cigarette, causing a fire. Police officers on the scene managed to extinguish the flames and provided immediate first aid. The man was then transported to Royal North Shore Hospital in a critical but stable condition. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries early on Saturday morning, October 26.
NSW Police have stated that a report will be prepared for the Coroner, and a critical incident team is investigating the case. Additionally, the investigation will undergo an independent review to ensure transparency in the findings.
This distressing incident has prompted authorities to remind the public about the availability of mental health resources for those in need. Support services, such as Lifeline at 13 11 14 and Beyond Blue at 1300 22 4636, are available for individuals experiencing crisis or emotional distress.
