Today marks 23 years since the devastating 9/11 terror attacks in New York City, where 343 brave firefighters from the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) lost their lives while courageously trying to save others trapped in the World Trade Center. Their ultimate sacrifice is a reminder of the selflessness and dedication of first responders during one of the darkest days in history.

In the years following the attacks, the toll on the FDNY community has continued. More than 360 FDNY members have since passed away from World Trade Center-related illnesses, caused by exposure to toxic dust and debris during rescue and recovery efforts at Ground Zero.

As we reflect on the tragedy of 9/11, we honour not only the memory of those who perished that day but also the ongoing sacrifices made by those who have succumbed to the lingering effects of that fateful mission. The bravery and resilience of the FDNY and all first responders serve as a symbol of hope, unity, and strength in the face of unimaginable adversity.
